Making Aromatherapy Jar Candles

aromatherapy-jar-candlesAromatherapy candles are a fantastic way to experience the benefits of essential oils. But often the store-bought candles are quite small. If you want a large aromatherapy candle that will burn for a long time, you may want to make some aromatherapy jar candles. The candle is created inside a glass jar, preventing spillage and dripping.

How do you make aromatherapy jar candles? Here are some basic steps.

The first step, of course, is to obtain some jars. Canning jars are perfect. They can be bought in bulk for quite a low price, and come in a variety of sizes to choose from. Perhaps the most suitable size is around a pint. Alternatively, you can clean out some old jelly, mayonaise, or peanut butter jars and use them to make your candle. But please beware that a cylindrical jar is the best. Jars with a narrow type are not to be used, because of problems lighting and extiguishing the candle.

The next step is to obtain wax to use in making your candles. While beeswax is the highest quality, it is also costly. Soy wax is a good alternative as it is healthy and natural. It is recommended that you avoid paraffin, because even though it is cheap its fumes are bad for your health, which makes aromatherapy pointless.

Now that you have wax, you want to choose what essential oils to include in the candles. Do some research on the properties and effects of different oils, and perhaps test the aroma of some oils in a shop to see which ones yo find relaxing and pleasant. You will not need much oil. Only 5 drops of essential oil for every 2 cups of dry wax flakes.

The wax you purchase will possibly come with candle-making instructions. If so, follow those. But here are the basic steps you can expect to follow. First, melt the wax. If it is beeswax, you melt it in a double boiler. Some vegetable waxes can be melted in the microwave. After the wax is melted and no longer being heated, you add the essential oil drops. Remember, only five drops of oil for every two cups of UNMELTED wax (you need to measure the wax before melting). Next, place the wick into the jar and hold it in place while pouring the wax inside. There is a device called a wick setter which you may find useful. Then finally, allow the wax to cool and harden while the wick is in place. The result will be an aromatherapy candle set inside a glass jar.

Making aromatherapy jar candles is simple and fun. Just make sure that you are using the appropriate kind of heat source for the type of wax you are using. Now you can enjoy aromatherapy candles for long hours at a very low price.
